About National Park De Hoge Veluwe

Located in the province of Gelderland, National Park De Hoge Veluwe spans over 5,400 hectares of varied landscapes including forests, heathlands, sand drifts, and wetlands. Established in 1935 by art collectors Anton and Helene Kröller-Müller, the park preserves a rich mosaic of ecosystems and is managed by the Kröller-Müller Foundation. The park’s diverse terrain supports abundant wildlife such as red deer, wild boar, mouflon, and numerous bird species, making it a hotspot for nature observation and ecological research. Unique to De Hoge Veluwe are its white sand drifts, remnants of post-glacial landscape formations, which add a rare desert-like environment in this temperate region. Visitors enjoy more than 40 miles (70 km) of marked trails suitable for hiking, walking, and mountain biking. A hallmark feature is the availability of free white bicycles for visitors to explore the park’s extensive network of cycling paths, providing an accessible and eco-friendly way to experience its beauty. The park also houses the Kröller-Müller Museum, world-famous for its collection of Van Gogh paintings and modern sculptures set within a natural setting. This blend of art, nature, and recreation attracts over 350,000 visitors annually. The park is a year-round destination with each season offering distinct landscapes, from blooming heaths in summer to snow-dusted forests in winter. Its well-maintained trails, educational programs, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities contribute to its popularity as a destination for both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts seeking tranquility and cultural enrichment.
